The main theme of the film is freedom, both literal and in the ability to choose one's own destiny - to break free of expectations. We wish for the film, while an exciting and fun science fiction, to also capture a magical sense of wonder. PROTO will overcome the expectations and restrictions placed on him and discovering his true self.

Loosely adapted from the Ambrose Bierce story 'The Moonlit Road', Dunlap and Whitehouse proceeded to add a comedic element, slapstick, a chase sequence, an 80s pop soundtrack, and a musical number. An homage to 80s screwball comedies and Buckaroo Banzai, it was largely made as practice for "actual, you know, real filmmaking". It is also, admittedly, Not Very Good.
